A Simple Stair Runner Made On A Budget

A Simple DIY Stair Runner (Made on a Budget)

How We Made the Stair Runner

Rather than purchasing a traditional stair runner, I used what I already had access to and kept things intentionally simple. I grabbed an outdoor rug, a utility knife, and some painter’s tape and decided to make it work. Here’s the process:
• I measured the width and depth of each stair to determine the runner size
• I marked clean, straight edges using painter’s tape
• I carefully cut the rug to size using a sharp utility knife
• I aligned each section to keep the look consistent and centered
Outdoor rugs are surprisingly durable, which made them a great option for stairs. They hold up well, have structure, and cut cleanly when measured properly.

Why This Worked

This approach worked better than expected for a few reasons. The texture of the outdoor rug added warmth without feeling heavy, the neutral tone kept the look classic and flexible, and because it was custom cut, the runner fits the stairs perfectly. Most importantly, it achieved the look I wanted without the price tag of a traditional stair runner.

A Reminder to Think Outside the Box

This project is a reminder that good design doesn’t always mean spending more. Sometimes it’s about being resourceful, trusting your instincts, and being just a little delusional in the best way. What started as a budget workaround turned into one of my favorite updates in our home.
